Eaton Canyon is in my opinion the best route in the San Gabriel Mountain Range due to the combination of access, excitement, fun, challenge, and beauty. It combines all of these aspects in excellent form. It seems each area has its classics, indisputable routes that are unparalleled and have no equal comparison. Eaton Canyon is one such canyon. It encompasses what the canyoneering in southern California is. The approach is nothing particularly special, and of June 2014, it has improved quite a bit over the years. Still steep and loose, but not quit as deathly scary as years past. Many of the pools have filled in following the Station Fire, and many jumps that used to be deep are very shallow now. Trees and other debris may be present, and few of the pools are very deep anymore. Regardless, Eaton Canyon is sure to please every type of adventurer. Beautiful waterfalls and plunge pools in slot canyon fashion make this a world class route.
