With an A6 rating, Ore Creek is a big step up in difficulty than many of the other Haast Canyons. It shares similar route characteristics as its comrades; a relatively short approach followed by a few hours in the creek itself. For those not familiar with the approach or without prior information, it can be damn difficult or impossible to find a safe entry to the head of the canyon. There is no real use trail on the approach, making it particularly hazy to determine the correct drop in point. Once in the canyon, you will be faced with some increasingly challenging terrain as the creek cuts deep and furiously through the schist. There are numerous jumps from 5-10 meters. There are numerous abseils up to 30 meters. There are numerous exposed and not very safe traverses to reach the anchors for the next drop. The danger points and technical difficulty on this route is high.
